Hugging Face has recently announced the launch of their latest open-source ChatGPT alternative, HuggingChat developed by OpenAssitant. Similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, HuggingChat is capable of generating the content, and codes, drafting emails, lyrics, and more. There is even an HuggingChat API that allows users to integrate with other existing apps and services.

Key Points:

  • Hugging Face released its own version of the AI chatbot known as HuggingChat which is an alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
  • The newly launched HuggingChat is currently available to test via a web interface and is capable of writing codes, lyrics, answering queries, drafting emails, and more.
  • Users can even integrate this AI chatbot into other applications and services by utilizing the HuggingChat API.

HuggingChat is a user interface which allows users to interact with an open-source chat assistant that has been developed by OpenAssistant, organized by LAION, a German non-profit that generates datasets that trained the text-to-image AI model, Stable Diffusion.

As of now, HuggingChat is available to test via the web interface. HugginFace API is also available which allows users to integrate with existing applications and services. Similar to ChatGPT, HuggingFace can perform a variety of tasks such as generating content, writing codes, drafting emails, lyrics, etc which makes it a good alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Hugging Face CEO, Clement Delangue also tweeted saying, “I believe we need an open-source alternative to ChatGPT to provide inclusivity, transparency, accountability and distribution of power”.

With the new AI-powered chatbot HuggingChat, Open Assistant not only aims to replicate OpenAI’s ChatGPT and its capabilities but instead, the group of volunteers aims to seek higher ambition.

Open Assistant stated on its GitHub page, “We are aiming to create an AI assistant of the future, which can not only help users in writing beneficial emails and cover letters but also perform meaningful work. Such as using API for integrating apps and services, dynamically researching information, and more, with the capability to be personalized and open to almost anyone.”

It also stated, They want to do this while being open and accessible which means they not only want to create a great and useful assistant but also ensure it is small and efficient, so anyone can run it on consumer hardware.

Regardless of the capabilities and features provided by HuggingChat, it has the potential to derail quickly based on the queries asked by the chatbot. HuggingFace does acknowledge the fact it has fine print.

However, HuggingChat is one of the many open-source alternatives to ChatGPT that has been released recently.

Last week, Stability AI also released its version of the chatbot known as StableLM, a set of models which can generate texts and codes using basic instructions.

Although few researchers have showcased their concerns and donuts regarding the development of open-source models such as StableLM which might have the potential to be flawed or might be used for malicious purposes. While few other researchers argue regarding the commercial models such as ChatGPT which are not immune to imperfection and exploitation.

Regardless of whether the open-source or gatekeeping model is better rages on, open-source models are now gaining momentum and not slowing down with the release of HuggingChat by Hugging Face.
