Chatgpt incognito mode feature: OpenAI rolls out ‘incognito mode’ on ChatGPT

On Tuesday, it was reported OpenAI is introducing a new feature, what one employee called an “Incognito mode” for its popular AI chatbot ChatGPT which doesn’t save users’ chat history or conversation with ChatGPT to use it for training its AI models.

OpenAI is also looking forward to introducing a new “ChatGPT Business” subscription plan for professionals that allows users to have extra control over their data.

It is reported the move has come forward as the observation on how OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other AI chatbots manage hundreds of millions of users’ data which is utilized for training and helping improve the AI models.

Last month, Italy placed a temporary ban on OpenAI’s ChatGPT due to violations of privacy and security and placed certain demands which need to be fulfilled to resume the services of ChatGPT in Italy. Apart from Italy, various other countries such as France and Spain were also probing the service.

OpenAI’s chief technology officer, Mira Murati stated that OpenAI has agreed with all the demands and European privacy and security laws. They are working forwards to assure the regulators.

There were speculations the new features were placed as a result of the ChatGPT ban in Italy. However, Mira Murati confirmed the introduction of new features has not occurred due to the ban of ChatGPT in Italy. She stated months-long efforts have been put in to have users “in the driver’s seat” regarding the collection of data.

“We will be moving towards this direction and prioritize users’ data privacy,” Murati said, with the aim that “it’s entirely eyes off and the AI models are super aligned: they perform things that you want to do”.

Previously user data and conversations have helped in training and making its software more reliable while reducing political bias, among others, she said, but added that the company still has many challenges which need to be tackled.

On 25 April, OpenAI released a new feature allowing users to “Turn off chat history” through their settings and export their data.

OpenAI’s product officer, Nicholas Turley, who likened this to an internet browser’s incognito mode said the company would still retain conversations for about 30 days to help monitor for abuse before deleting them permanently.

Along with this ChatGPT’s Business subscription will be available in the coming months, which will include more controls to users and restrict the OpenAI from utilizing user’s conversations for training AI models by default.

Microsoft, which earlier this year announced a partnership with OpenAI, already offers ChatGPT to businesses. Mira Murati stated services would be appealed to existing customers of cloud providers.
